Gaiety Theatre: getting to Ayr’s historic venue

The Gaiety Theatre stands on Carrick Street in Ayr town centre. Ayr Gaiety Partnership owns and runs the venue, which describes itself as one of Scotland’s oldest theatres and says it welcomes over 65,000 people annually.

The theatre was built in 1902. Its programme includes drama, comedy, music, dance, opera, special-interest shows and a winter pantomime, so the type of performance can vary from one visit to the next.

For a broader day in town, one day in Ayr can include the town centre and Alloway.

Ayr station is about a 10-minute walk from the theatre via High Street, according to the Access Scottish Theatre guide. If you’re arriving by train, that gives you a simple route to plan on foot. A taxi can drop you off at the main entrance.

A ramp and automatic doors at the front left of the building lead to the box office and bar and restaurant area. There are six wheelchair-user spaces with companion seats in the middle and rear stalls; book these directly with the box office by telephone or in person. The box office telephone number is 01292 288235.

The Circle and balcony are reached by stairs, and the building has no lift, so choose stalls seats if stairs are not suitable. The theatre also has accessible toilets, a ground-floor bar and restaurant area, a concession kiosk and an auditorium loop system. Ask the box office about the loop system.

The theatre’s official website provides event-specific details and booking links. Before choosing a show, check its individual listing for the venue, performance date, start time and ticket availability. Check the official site before you go, as show details and availability can change.

Some events listed in Ayr may take place at a different venue, so confirm the location on the specific listing rather than assuming every performance is at the Gaiety. For questions about wheelchair spaces or the loop system, contact the box office on 01292 288235.
